Strangers and the average person don't get to see how Roy is with the people he's gathered around him. He encourages his public reputation for them presumably so that they'll underestimate his intelligence and skill as a soldier. With women he is charming and flirtatious, with men he is arrogant. He relaxes only around the few who have proven themselves to him through their actions and ideals.

He tends to place a lot of faith in his friends, and wants to protect them almost more than anything else. The only relationship we've actually seen grown from the beginning is the one he's built with Edward and Alphonse. At first they were just talented children who made a terrible mistake and he treated them as such. He kept their secret, but held it over them in order to get them to do what he wanted, and used them to further his own goals. As they kept on pushing forward and proving themselves Roy trusted them more and more until they too became friends he could rely on. He now treats them as equals more than tools, and has depended on them to do important things on more than one occasion. Including saving the country.

Allowing people to become that close to him also makes them his biggest weakness and trigger. He would go all out to protect them at almost any cost, and it's a tremendous hit when he loses them. He can't handle grief very well. When Hughes died Roy seemed to move on from the tragedy, not looking into the murder and acting like finding the truth didn't matter, but secretly he was harboring guilt at not being there, and anger at the killer. When he finally confronted Envy, who admitted to striking the blow, nothing mattered more in that moment than causing Envy pain and taking his revenge. This moment was the closest Roy had ever come to abandoning everything he'd built for himself, and it ultimately took Hawkeye threatening to shoot him and take her own life afterward to bring him back from the edge of his rage.

Roy doesn't seem to doubt very often, but he did surround himself with people just in case something like that happened (when he recruited Hawkeye to be his aide he specifically said that not only would she be watching his back but she would be able to shoot him in the back in case he ever went too far), so it's possible that he does not have as much faith in himself as he leads others to believe. He doesn't like the weaknesses he has, but he admits to them and plans accordingly just on the off chance that something happens.

☣ Character

Character Name: Roy Mustang
Character Age: 30

Canon + Format: Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (referenced with anime episodes instead of manga chapters since I can't find it ;__; There will be some spoilers in this app and gameplay itself, as they are unavoidable in certain details.

Background: FMA Wiki article

Canon Point: Episode 59 when he's forced to open the gate, but before Truth takes it's price from him. (Clip is from 10:40 to about 12:00)

Personality: On the surface Roy has two separate facets that work with each other. On the one hand he is quite a lazy jerk. He often shirks his office duties in order to get out of doing paperwork, and is known to be seen flirting with beautiful women; using his charm to entice them away from other enlisted men. He's arrogant, selfish, and entirely in love with himself, which lends to his reputation as a careless, cocky womanizer. Dig a little deeper and one can see that only thing that seems to motivate him is his desire to be in power as the leader of the country and he is willing to do whatever it takes to get himself higher up that ladder. This makes him absolutely ruthless when it comes to military strategy, especially whenever a possible promotion is involved. He's also known to use his subordinates and manipulate everyone around him into acting exactly as he wants them to without seemingly having a hand in their decisions.

It usually takes someone getting close to him to see any part of the real Roy Mustang. He is incredibly loyal to his followers and once he knows he can trust someone he places it in them without holding anything back. He's determined to take all of his people with him to the top, and absolutely refuses to leave anyone behind even if it would make his own path easier to walk. He has been known to go out of his way to protect the people he cares about at the cost of his own safety. Sometimes he can be stubborn, or proud, and has a deadly temper that flares up whenever his friends are in danger. His judgment is far from perfect. In fact, much of his strength comes from those he chooses to surround himself with, from the people who keep him on track, to those who prevent him from breaking down, to the ones he depends on to stop him if he goes too far.

Over the course of the series Roy has grown into a stronger man, capable of the responsibility he takes upon himself. He learns from his own mistakes, and the mistakes of others, to become a leader capable of protecting the country while caring for its people. It is revealed at the end of the series that he had decided to restore the Ishvalan people to their lives before becoming the Fuhrer, wanting to set aside the wars and restore the country itself to an era of peace. It is things like this that are his true motivation to everything he does.

In 'Yet Another Man's Battefield' a young Roy admitted that he joined the military fully aware that he might die in a ditch, and is originally okay with that fate if it would allow him to become a cornerstone that the country was built upon, but since then has been motivated to survive and make a difference with his own power instead. He is a very caring man, though he hides it well behind his outward attitudes.

Appearance: Roy, Roy's gloves, Roy with desert additions, cause I think it's a fitting look for him.

Abilities:  Roy is a powerful state alchemist specializing in the fire-based alchemy he learned from Riza Hawkeye's father's research. Using the combination of ignition cloth, and a transmutation circle on the back of his gloves he can quickly and effectively activate his alchemy. He can control how big or small his flames are (from the size of a lighter's flame, to an explosion) and aim accurately to a specific spot. For example he is able to light Envy's tongue on fire in episode 53. Video example of that moment. This is also a good example of his power in general as he is also capable of engulfing Envy completely in flame. He tends to use a different hand for each type of attack as well, left for the lighter touches, and right for the bigger flames.

Though he is able to produce impressive explosions, he is limited to how powerful he can make them. The worst damage he had ever been able to cause was with a philosopher's stone which enabled him to blow up several buildings to whole blocks at a time during the Extermination of Ishval. He usually limits himself, too, only using the strength that is necessary for the job that needs to be done.

Aside from his flame alchemy he understands and is able to use standard physical transmutations, but he needs to draw the appropriate circle in order to do it. His gloves are not a shortcut for this type of alchemy. It's also been said in an omake that he sometimes raises the oxygen density around a woman to make her dizzy so he can rescue her from falling and flirt in order to score a date. He can't create a spark in high humidity, but water itself isn't as much of a weakness as people assume. In large quantities he can separate the hydrogen and oxygen in water molecules. He will only do this in a situation where it won't pose a danger to innocent people, and has only done it once in canon in order to blow up Lust. He has been known to use lighters and matches to active his transmutations as well.

Because of where I am taking him from in canon he has seen the "Truth" and is also able to use alchemy without a transmutation circle by clapping his hands together creating a circle within himself. However, it will be a long time before he remembers and discovers this ability. After all he has to rediscover his alchemy from the beginning again.

Roy is incredibly intelligent, and due to his involvement in the military he also has some skill with firearms and hand to hand combat, though neither are his preferred methods of engagement. The OVA Yet Another Man's Battlefield follows a period of time he spent in training.

Items/Weapons: The chessboard he earned from General Grumman after defeating him for the first time at chess, Ignition cloth gloves (while they are sort of his weapons the only thing special about the gloves themselves is the cloth they are made out of which sparks when he snaps his fingers. The symbol on the back is useless without his own personal ability), and his State assigned pocketwatch.

First Person Sample:

So, if I understand the situation correctly I'm a survivor of a war that devastated the country, polluted the land, and poisoned who knows how many people. The life that I have always known is merely a replacement for my true existence here which was lost during the curing process. Now I have to live with this knowledge and adjust even though everything here is strange to me.

That has to be the sorriest explanation I have ever heard. You can't just create an entire lifetime of memories! I will find out just who is behind this so I can return to the people who are counting on me. Even if it takes me years.

There will be hell to pay for anyone who tries to stop me.

Third Person Sample:

Roy Mustang
Day 6; Year 1915 210 PC

Adjusting to this place has been understandably difficult considering how different it is from Amestris. It's clear that the country has been ravaged by war even without reading the pamphlets. The air is thick with it, and everyone living in the city are survivors. You can just see it in their eyes

Roy puts down his pen and rubs a hand over his face, pleased to note that at least his hand no longer shakes when he writes. When he'd first woken up it was all he could do to stand up and walk. He still didn't quite understand how he managed to make it to the surface under his own power. Pushing aside his makeshift journal, he selected a brand new piece of paper and carefully began to draw. If the weakness was going away then maybe...

No, nothing. Roy sighed and lifted his hand off the simple transmutation circle. His alchemy was still gone, even down to the most basic of transmutations. Was that what the "Truth" had taken from him when he passed through gate? Or was it just proof that his memories were created by a machine?

Frustrated, he crumpled the circle and threw it across the room, burying his face in his hands. How could it be a lie? All that work, the pain, the friends he'd made...they had to exist! Roy forced his doubt away and pulled his journal close again, resuming his notes with a determined scrawl.

At any cost I will survive too. Whether this is real, or just a punishment, or something else entirely, I am who I am because of these memories and I will stand by them to the very best of my ability!
